Maryland Drivers: Impact of New York Traffic Convictions

by Seth Azria on 3/03/2014

Most New York Traffic Convictions Not Likely added to MD Record

Like New York,  and most states in the United States, Maryland is a member of the Driver License Compact (“Compact”). Through this Compact the member states share information about driver convictions and suspensions with other member states. The Maryland MVA will therefore add to a Maryland record for certain out-of-state violations as identified in the Compact.

These violations are:

  • Alcohol or drug related offenses;
  • Leaving the scene of a personal injury accident;
  • Homicide or manslaughter involving a vehicle;
  • Use of a motor vehicle in the commission of a felony.

Even though a conviction in New York for speeding, for example, is not likely to incur points on a Maryland driving record, there are other consequences to be considered. For example, your ticket may cause the New York DMV to make a Driver Responsibility Assessment which can dramatically increase the the expense associated with a particular conviction.

Insurance Premium Increases are Still a Concern

Most importantly, it is likely your insurance company will learn of your New York conviction and may increase your premiums or drop coverage. It remains important to mitigate the charge as much as possible.

If you have been charged with a traffic violation in Upstate, Central, or Western New York please call (315) 364-1155 to discuss your case with a traffic defense lawyer to determine the best course of action in your case.
